As of the end of April, the Tigray REB reported that approximately 50 per cent of schools in the region remain closed, primarily due to damage sustained during periods of fighting, as well as the continued occupation of schools by IDPs or military forces. Additionally, nearly 80 per cent of schools assessed for mine clearance operations were found to contain unexploded ordinances (UXO) or explosive remnants of war (ERW),
impacting UNICEF’s school catch-up strategy in the region.
