The Alliance for the Prevention of Atrocity Crimes (APAC) expresses profound alarm and condemnation following the release of the Commission of Inquiry on Tigray Genocide’s (CITG) report, “War-Induced Genocidal Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Tigray, Ethiopia.” This comprehensive investigation into atrocities committed during the Tigray War (2020-2022) uncovers a horrifying pattern of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) that meets the threshold of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.
The report’s findings—based on data from 481,201 survivors—reveal that 286,250 individuals (59.5%) suffered SGBV, including 152,108 rapes, widespread gang assaults, sexual slavery, and mutilations intended to prevent births and inflict irreversible harm. Perpetrators, including Eritrean, Ethiopian, and Amhara forces, explicitly voiced genocidal intent through statements aimed at “diluting” Tigrayan ethnicity, “purifying” bloodlines, and eradicating future generations. Such acts, resulting in 529 deaths, thousands of unwanted pregnancies, and pervasive physical, psychological, and social devastation, constitute deliberate efforts to destroy the Tigrayan people in whole or in part.
